Kirkland® Minoxidil Europe

Minoxidil side effects and safety

Last reviewed:

Topical minoxidil is well tolerated by most people, but knowing what is normal helps you stick with treatment.

Common side effects

  • Temporary shedding in the first weeks
  • Scalp itching, dryness or flaking
  • Redness or mild irritation
  • Unwanted hair growth on the face if the product runs onto the skin

Why shedding happens

Minoxidil pushes resting follicles into a new growth cycle. Old hairs fall out to make room for new ones. This usually settles within a few weeks and is often a sign the treatment is working.

Reducing irritation

  • Switch from liquid to foam, or to a low-alcohol formula
  • Apply only to a dry scalp
  • Use a gentle shampoo
  • Do not apply more than the recommended dose

Kirkland® offers one standard liquid formula. FOLIGAIN® offers low-alcohol and foam formats, so you can switch without changing brand.

When to stop and seek advice

Stop using minoxidil and contact a doctor if you experience chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness, dizziness, sudden weight gain, swelling of the hands or feet, or persistent scalp redness.
