Kirkland® Minoxidil Europe
The complete minoxidil guide
Last reviewed:
Minoxidil is the best-known topical treatment for hereditary hair thinning. Understanding how it works helps you use it correctly and set realistic expectations.
How minoxidil works
Minoxidil was first developed as a blood-pressure medicine. Applied to the scalp, it widens small blood vessels, improves blood flow and nutrient delivery to follicles, and prolongs the growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle. Over time, thin miniaturised hairs can become thicker and longer.
Who it works best for
- Hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men and women
- Thinning at the crown or top of the head
- People who start early, while follicles are still active
- Less effective on long-term completely bald areas
How to apply minoxidil solution
- Start with a dry scalp and dry hair.
- Fill the dropper to the 1 ml line.
- Part the hair and apply directly to the thinning area of the scalp, not the hair.
- Gently massage with your fingertips.
- Wash your hands and let it dry for 2-4 hours before going to bed or wetting your hair.
- Repeat as directed on the leaflet, usually twice a day for 5% in men.
Results timeline
| Time | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Weeks 2-8 | Possible temporary shedding as old hairs make way for new ones |
| Months 2-4 | Fine, soft new hairs may appear |
| Months 4-6 | Visible improvement in density for many users |
| Months 6-12 | Peak results; continue to maintain |
Why consistency matters
Minoxidil only works while you use it. If you stop, the hair it helped maintain usually falls out within a few months. Choosing a brand you can reliably reorder locally, such as FOLIGAIN® through its regional European stores, makes long-term use easier.
